Vedanta to continue using local contractors at iron, coal plants

The management of the Vedanta group has agreed to chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s directive to continue with local contractors at their pig iron and coal plants, Sakhali MLA Pramod Sawant said on Tuesday.Irked by the appointment of a new material handling and transportation contractor from Delhi, the Progressive Contractors Association, which provides contract services to Vedanta at their Amona and Navelim plants, has stopped ore-handling.

According to sources, Vedanta has appointed S S and Company, which has brought in machinery and trucks to its plants. Around 35 contractors and truck operators, who help transport iron ore, are likely to be affected by the proposed selection of a non-Goa-based contractor.
